Case Adapting facilities to the Millennial workforce

How to create best-in-class workplace experiences for the millennial workforce

The millennial generation, which is now entering the workforce in vast numbers, will re-shape the future of the workplace. Attracting the best of these millennial workers will be critical for your business. How do you turn this into a best case scenario?

Millennials matter. By 2020 this new generation of workers will make up 50% of the global workforce and thereby become one of the critical elements of your competitive advantage.

For HR professionals, the ability to adapt the HR and workplace strategies to this new generation of workers will therefore be the determining factor that is going to divide the good companies from the bad.

For GoDaddy – a company recently recognized as one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For – integrating the needs and wants of the millennial workforce into the workplace experience was a necessity.

About GoDaddy

GoDaddy is the world’s largest domain name registrar with a mission to radically shift the global economy toward small businesses by empowering people to easily start, confidently grow and successfully run their own ventures. With more than 14 million customers worldwide and more than 62 million domain names under management, GoDaddy gives small business owners the tools to name their idea, build a beautiful online presence, attract customers and manage their business.

The majority of the workforce at GoDaddy consists of millennials and in our experience this sets completely new requirements to the design of both service and workplace experience. At the initial stage when first starting to work with GoDaddy, researching the needs of millennials and what this new generation of workers’ value was therefore our key priority.”

- Wade Lewis, the ISS Key Account Manager at GoDaddy

What truly sets millennials apart from previous generations is the use of technology and their affinity with the digital world. But this is not the only thing. They behave differently too.

For millennials, work-life balance and personal development is more important than financial rewards and they are attracted to employer brands that they admire as consumers. CSR and sustainability profiles are extremely important for this generation of workers and a majority would even go as far as to leave an employer if the company's CSR values do not match their own.

Wade Lewis, adds:

During our research we found that factors such as trust, an inspiring and friendly working environment, cool space and a focus on sustainability were the most important factors for the millennials working at GoDaddy. So we acted on it.

Besides changing the food service from delivering traditional dishes to new trendy tastes and cuisines, we made sure that when employees walk into the building, they are met by a greeter who knows all the important information about the person coming in and can give them a very personalized and warm welcome upon their entrance.

As we also figured out the importance of sustainability we started an initiative called Kick the Can, which resonated very well with the employees. We removed more than a 1,000 desk trash cans and created 100 large trash cans for people to share. This helped us ease on the environmental footprint and we are saving many barrels of petroleum a year now."

"At GoDaddy, the culture is very unique. It is not traditional manufacturing, and it is not even traditional for tech. When people come to work every day, they need to feel comfortable, free and have fun. If you look around our facilities, you will see slides, go-carts and ping pong tables. Here people have the comfort to do whatever they need to do and have fun in our environment.”
- Keith Tice, Vice President and Chief Procurement Officer at Go Daddy
